DELHI: Citing good conduct, Delhi LG releases Jessica Lal murder convict from Jail
New Delhi, June 2 : Manu Sharma, son of former Union Minister Vinod Sharma, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing model Jessica Lal 21 years ago, has been ordered to be released prematurely from Jail after Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijlal today approved the recommendation of Delhi Sentence Review Board.
The recommendation was made by the Sentence Board on account of Sharma’s good conduct at a meeting chaired by Delhi Home Minister Satyender Jain on May 11 last.
Sharma had shot dead Model Jessica Lal after she refused to serve him a drink at Tamarind Court restaurant on April 30, 1999. The lower court had acquitted him but the High Court reversed the order and sentenced him to life imprisonment in December 2006. The sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in April 2010.
The sentence was to expire after three years from now but in view of his good conduct, the Sentence Board was of the view that he may be released from prison prematurely.
Sharma worked voluntarily in prison for the welfare of prisoners and showed good conduct in jail which prompted the authorities to allow him work in an open environment in jail.
The incident had created a sensation in the society in 1999 and there was a huge public outcry following which the Delhi High Court, after giving a hearing to both the sides, reversed the order and sent Sharma to prison for life.
