Sensex touches 60k for the first time, Nifty closes above 17,856

In a historic move, benchmark indices reached fresh highs with Sensex crossing over 60,000 for the first time. Nifty went above 17000.

The 30 share pack Sensex added 163.11 points or 0.27 per cent to close at 60,048.47 while Nifty moved ahead 30.25 points or 0.17 per cent to close at 17,853.20, market sources said.

Among the blue chip companies, Asian Paints was the topmost gainer rising 3.74 per cent. The others were  Eicher Motors, M&M HCL Tech, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki and Grasim Industries.

Tata Steel was the topmost loser in the Nifty pack falling 3.92 per cent. JSW Steel, SBI, Divi’s labs, Shree Cement, ITC, NTPC and ONGC were those who ended in the Red.

Broader Market indices ended mixed but underperformed their headline peers. Nifty smallcap rose 0.12 per cent and Nifty Midcap declined 0.78 per cent. Nifty 500, the broadest Index on NSE, ended down 0.09 per cent.

Market breadth was in favour of losers as 1330 stocks ended in the green while 1937 others  settled with cuts. As many as 244 securities hit the 52-week high mostly from microchip space. About 285 stocks hit upper limits and 170 lower circuit limits.
