Benchmark indices go up as investors disregard rise in Covid-19 cases

Disregarding the rise in Omicron version of Coronavirus cases, investors in Stock Markets on Tuesday sought to buy Midcap shares at low levels taking the benchmark indices upwards for the fifth session in the last six days.

The 30-share pack Sensex went up 477.24 points or 0.83 per cent to close at 57,987.48 points while its broader peer Nifty rose 147 points or 0.86 per cent to 17,233.25.

RBL Bank witnessed low level buying, up 3 per cent while PVR declined 4 per cent amidst Covid-19 restrictions. BSE climbed 6 per cent after the establishment said its board would consider issuing bonus shares. Tyre stocks gained traction, CEAT, JK Tyre rose 10 to 12 per cent. India VIX, the volatility barometer, slipped 4 per cent to 16.47.

Among the top companies, Sun Pharma was the topmost gainer, increasing 3.09 per cent.

The other gainers were Asian Paints, M&M, UltraTech Paints, NTPC, Titan, Coal India, Tata Motors, BPCL and L&T.

In the Nifty pack, Power Grid was the topmost loser, slipping 0.34 per cent. IndusInd Bank ended in the Red. Broader Market indices ended higher, outperforming their headline peers. Nifty Smallcap rose 1.55 per cent and Nifty Midcap went up 1.18 per cent.

Nifty500, the broadest index on NSE, ended up 0.95 per cent. Gujarat Narmada Fertilisers, Zensar Tech, Welspun India, Oil India, Hindustan Copper and Astral Pipes were the top gainers from mid and Smallcap indices, rising 4 to 8 per cent. 

On the other hand, PVR, Firstsource Solutions, Rossari BioTech, All Small Finance Bank,  Trent and Aditya Birla Fashion Retail emerged as the biggest losers from broader market spaces, dropping 1 to 4 per cent.

All the sectoral indices on the NSE ended with gains with Nifty Auto being the topmost gainer, rising 1.94 per cent followed by 1.04 per cent gains in the Nifty PSU Bank. Nifty FMCG, Nifty Metal and Nifty Pharma were the other top gainers.

The Market breadth was in favour of gainers as 2612 stocks ended in the Green even as 772 companies ended ended with cuts. Altogether 372 securities hit the 52-week highs mostly from Smallcap space, while 15 others hit the 52-week lows, mostly from Microcap space.
