Mumbai : Even as Sensex hit the 50,000 mark for the first time in the history on Thursday, it dropped 167 .36 points or 0.34 per cent to close at 49624.76 after news came in that that a Covid Vaccine facility in Pune’s Serum Institute had caught fire.
After the news broke out that the second floor of the Pune institute had caught fire, investors sentiments took a back seat as they were hoping that the vaccine would help in eradicating the Coronavirus pandemic.
NSE Nifty fell 54.35 points or 0.37 per cent to 14,590.35.
Reliance Industries gained 3 per cent ahead of earnings scheduled on Friday.
Bajaj Finance gained 3 per cent after Quarter 3 results, Bajaj Finserv registered one per cent gain.
India VIX rose 3 per cent as volatility rose showing nervousness among investors.
All the sectors ended in the red, Nifty PSU bank was the topmost sectoral loser.
A total of 281 stocks hit the 52-week highs. Among them were L&T, MRF, Siemens, Voltas, TaMo, Havells and Bosch and Bajaj Auto.
Tata Motors was the topmost gainer rising 6.38 per cent. Among the other gainers were Bajaj Finance, Reliance Industries, Bajaj Auto, UPL, Eicher Motors, Asian Paints, and Bajaj Finserv.
ONGC was the topmost loser in the Nifty pack dropping 3.34 per cent. Tata Steel, Coal India, GAIL, NTPC, SBI, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Adani Ports and Sun Pharma ended in the red.
