Sensex, Nifty rise to a new high as Vaccine approvals in some countries gain momentum

Hopes of Corona Vaccine pushes Sensex up 429 points

 

Mumbai : The 30-share pack Sensex on Monday climbed 347.42 points or 0.77 per cent to 45,426.97 while Nifty rose 97.20 points or 0.73 per cent to 13,355.75 even as Covid Vaccine approvals in some countries gained momentum and there were signals coming from USA that economic stimulus is being planned for revival.

Buying in Financials and FMCG stocks, mostly in the second half of the day, gave the benchmark indices the much needed push for a record breaking new high although the global cues remained weak during the day.

The Government trimmed SUTTI stake in Axis Bank and the stock ended flat.

ADF foods rose 15 per cent to an all time high after Convergence Finance picked up stake.

Tata Chemicals gained 4 per cent after promotor upped the stake.

ONGC rose over 3 per cent as its overseas arm discovers Oil in Columbia.

Pfizer stock went over 1 per cent after the company sought nod to launch Vaccine in India.

However, much of the movements were from Pharma and small caps stocks. The broader market outperformed the main indices.

Among the bluechip companies, the biggest gainer was UPL as it went up 4.56 per cent to Rs 476.50 followed by Adani Ports, HUL, Bharti Airtel, ONGC, ITC, GAIL, Coal India and HDFC which rose between 2 and 4 per cent.

Among the losers in Nifty, the topmost loser was Nestle India followed by Kotak Mahindra Bank, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, Maruti Suzuki and HDFC Bank.

Alok Industries, Trident, Gujarat Narmada Fertilisers, IRCTC, Syngene International and Sriram Transport Finance were the biggest gainers from mid and small cap indices, rising 6 to 10 per cent.

Escorts, City Union Bank, Ipca Labs, Granules India, CDSL and Affle India were the major losers from broader market space falling in the range of 2 to 7 per cent.

The Market breadth was in favour of gainers as 2036 stocks ended in the green, while 936 settled with cuts. Altogether 310 securities hit the 52-week highs mostly from Smallcap space. 

All eyes are set on SC verdict on Tata-Mistry case tomorrow as judgement is expected to come in.
