Understanding Jio Platforms IPO: An Investor’s Guide

India’s biggest IPO is open, and the numbers are staggering: 533 million customers, 284 million 5G users, 60% of wireless data. But if you think Jio is just a telecom company, you’re looking at the wrong story.

Additionally, My Wealth Post has published a detailed four-part series breaking down Jio Platforms for retail investors. Here’s a quick overview of what each part covers.

The transformation most investors miss

When Jio launched in 2016, data cost Rs 228 per GB and fewer than 10 million Indians had 4G. By 2026, data costs Rs 7.50 per GB and average monthly usage has crossed 26.7 GB. Jio didn’t just enter the telecom market — it restructured it entirely. Part 1 explains the five platform layers Jio has built on top of this connectivity base, and why connectivity is just the starting point.

A technology company, not a network reseller

Most telecom operators buy equipment. Jio built its own. Its entire 5G stack — radio equipment, core network, billing software — was developed in-house. It is the only Indian company in the top 20 of WIPO’s global patent rankings, with over 7,200 patent applications filed. Part 2 goes deep into JioBrain, JioGridX, and why owning the technology stack gives Jio a cost and speed advantage that’s very hard to replicate.

Three massive growth runways still ahead

261 million Indians were still on 2G as of mid-2026. Only 21% of Indian households had fixed broadband. Fewer than 5% of India’s 79 million small businesses have fixed internet. These are not problems Jio is trying to solve — they are the markets Jio is actively entering. Part 3 breaks down how JioBharat, JioFiber, JioAirFiber, and the enterprise segment each address one of these opportunities.

The financials and what the IPO means

Revenue has grown at 15.8% annually, EBITDA at 17.8%. Net debt to EBITDA has dropped from 0.88x to 0.36x. Cash generation after capex has risen nearly 30-fold in two years. Part 4 covers the infrastructure, the Reliance relationship, and Jio’s roadmap — AI exports, satellite connectivity, 6G research, and net zero targets.
