Anup Bagchi spent 34 years building India\u2019s second-largest private lender. Now he must fix the largest one\u2019s balance sheet after its giant merger and win back investors who have waited for growth.<\/strong><\/p>\n

HDFC Bank Ltd. has picked an outsider, and not just any outsider. Anup Bagchi, who spent his entire career at the ICICI group, will become managing director and chief executive officer of India\u2019s largest private-sector lender for three years starting 27 October.<\/p>\n

The Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment, and the bank\u2019s board cleared it on 1 October. Bagchi joins the board as an additional director from 2 October, and his appointment still needs shareholder approval.<\/p>\n

He succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, who has led the bank since 2020 and told the board in August that he would not seek another term. His term ends on 26 October.<\/p>\n

The bank had sent two names to the regulator: Bagchi and deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha. Choosing the outside candidate is itself a signal. HDFC Bank has long been known for promoting from within, and Jagdishan had been with the bank since 1996.<\/p>\n

A retail builder\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bagchi, 56, joined ICICI in 1992. He ran ICICI Securities as chief executive and served as an executive director of ICICI Bank from 2017 to 2023, overseeing retail, business and rural banking.<\/p>\n

During that period ICICI Bank became the first private Indian lender with a home-loan book of more than \u20b92 trillion. Since June 2023 he has led ICICI Prudential Life Insurance. He holds degrees from IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore.<\/p>\n

That background fits HDFC Bank\u2019s main challenge. Since absorbing mortgage lender HDFC Ltd. in 2023, the bank has carried a much larger loan book than its deposit base comfortably supports.<\/p>\n

It has spent the years since slowing loan growth and chasing deposits to bring the two back into balance. Investors have rewarded that discipline only grudgingly, and the stock has lagged rivals that kept growing. ICICI Bank, Bagchi\u2019s former employer, was the clearest example of a rival that grew deposits and retail loans together.<\/p>\n

What changes<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first test is cultural. An executive from HDFC Bank\u2019s fiercest competitor will have to win over a management team built around internal promotion, including Bharucha, who was passed over. How senior leaders respond in the coming months will show whether the handover is smooth.<\/p>\n

The second test is strategy. Bagchi\u2019s record suggests a focus on household deposits, cross-selling insurance and wealth products, and a faster digital push. The bank\u2019s shares closed 1.76% higher at \u20b9721.20 on 1 October, before the announcement, as the market welcomed clarity on the long-open succession question.<\/p>\n

The appointment also opens a leadership search at ICICI Prudential Life, one of India\u2019s largest private life insurers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
